The African Union is an intergovernmental organization consisting of most African nations. At its 1996 Assembly of Heads of State, the African Union (then called the Organization of African Unity) approved a Resolution on Bioethics that affirmed "…the inviolability of the human body and the genetic heritage of the human species" and called for "supervision of research facilities to obviate selective eugenic by-products, particularly those relating to sex considerations."<ref name="resolutions">"[http://www.africa-union.org/root/au/Documents/Decisions/hog/6HoGAssembly1996.pdf Declarations, resolutions and decision adopted by the thirty-second ordinary session of the assembly of heads of state and government]," African Union (July 8-10, 1996)</ref>
